Ultra+ vs Strong App: Which One Should You Use

Strong is the quickest way to record a set and it exports your whole history as a CSV. Ultra+ is slower to open but does more once you are in: nutrition with barcode scanning, your best set on every set, and a coach that has read your training before you ask it anything.

Strong is built around one screen, and that screen is excellent

Strong has been around long enough that its logging screen is close to a standard. Pick the exercise, tap the weight, tap the reps, tick the set. There is a plate calculator and a warm-up calculator next to it. Very little gets between you and the record. If you have a program written down somewhere and you only want the app to remember what you did, Strong is hard to beat and the free tier gives you unlimited workouts.

The limit is that it stops there on purpose. Strong does not plan, does not progress you, does not track food and has nobody to ask. Its own free tier caps custom routines at three, which is the main reason people upgrade.

What Ultra+ adds, and what it costs you

Ultra+ logs sets the same way, and adds two things to the same screen: what you did last time for that exercise, and your best ever set. That is the whole of progressive overload made visible while you are deciding what to load.

Around that sit the parts Strong has no version of. A nutrition journal with food search, barcode scanning and macros. Blaze, a coach in the app that reads your workouts, your food and your bodyweight trend before it answers, and that changes your plan when you ask it to rather than on its own. A weekly card that reviews the week you actually trained. A finished first week built from your quiz answers before you open the app.

What it costs you is money and portability. Strong is free for unlimited workouts and has an Apple Watch app. Ultra+ has no free tier, no watch app and no web app, and it does not export your data yet. Strong's CSV export is a real advantage if you like owning your history in a spreadsheet.

Price, side by side

Strong is free with three custom routines, and PRO is $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year. Ultra+ is $12.99 a month or $74.99 a year after a 7-day trial. So Ultra+ costs roughly two and a half times Strong PRO on the yearly plan. You are paying for the nutrition side and the coach; if you would not use either, Strong is better value and it is not close.

Which one to pick

Strong app icon

Pick Strong if

You write your own programs and want the fastest possible record of them. You want your data as a CSV. You log from an Apple Watch. You do not want to pay, and three routines is enough for you.

Ultra+ app icon

Pick Ultra+ if

You want your protein and your training in one app. You want your all-time best set in front of you on the set you are doing. You want to be able to ask why something stalled and get an answer built from your own numbers. You want a first week that already exists rather than a blank routine list.

The apps in detail

Ultra+ app icon

Ultra+

Our app

Hypertrophy and strength tracker for iOS and Android with Blaze, an AI coach that reads your log.

No free tier · $12.99/mo · $74.99/yr

Ultra+ is a training and nutrition app for people who lift to get bigger and stronger. It runs on iOS and Android, and it does not have a web app or a watch app. You log sets the normal way: pick the exercise, enter weight and reps, mark the set done, and a rest timer starts. What makes it different is what sits next to the input. Every set shows what you did last time for that exercise and your all-time best set, so the number to beat is on the screen instead of in your memory.

Where it is strong

  • Previous set and all-time best set shown on every set
  • Blaze reads your workouts, nutrition and bodyweight before answering, and changes the plan only when you ask
  • Nutrition journal with barcode scan and macros in the same app
  • Volume change after each session and a weekly card built from what you actually did
  • A finished first week already in the app from the quiz

Where it falls short

  • No web app
  • No Apple Watch app
  • No program marketplace or library of named programs
  • Newer app with a smaller exercise catalog (around 500) than JEFIT's 1,400 plus
  • No plate calculator and no data export
  • No free tier: a 7-day trial, then paid

Best for: Lifters who have trained for a while, want the number to beat on every set, and want a coach that reads their training and their food before it answers.

Strong

A simple, fast logbook for the gym. Free for unlimited workouts with three custom routines.

Free: Unlimited workouts, three custom routines · $4.99/mo · $29.99/yr

Strong has been around long enough that its whole pitch is simplicity. The active workout screen is the fastest in this group: previous set values next to each input, an auto-starting rest timer, a plate calculator and a warm-up calculator a tap away. It tracks best sets and estimated 1RM per exercise, and you can export every workout to CSV from the settings. It runs on iOS and Android with an Apple Watch app.

Where it is strong

  • One of the fastest set-logging screens around
  • Plate and warm-up calculators built in
  • CSV export of everything
  • Apple Watch app, and unlimited workouts on the free tier

Where it falls short

  • Free tier stops at three custom routines
  • No programs or progression logic: it records, it does not plan
  • No nutrition tracking
  • No coach

Best for: Lifters who run their own program from a spreadsheet or their head and want the quickest possible logbook.

Frequently asked questions

Is Strong still being updated?

Yes. Strong ships updates and its App Store listing is current. It has stayed deliberately narrow, which is why it can feel unchanged: the logging screen is the product and it has not needed rewriting.

How many routines does Strong's free tier allow?

Three custom routines, with unlimited workouts logged against them. PRO removes the cap and adds extra charts and body measurements, at $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year.

Does Ultra+ export my data like Strong does?

No. Strong exports everything as a CSV; Ultra+ does not have an export yet. If holding your own history in a spreadsheet matters to you, that is a real reason to choose Strong.

Which is faster to log a set?

Strong, by a little. Ultra+ shows more on the same screen, including your previous set and your best set, which is an extra thing to read. If raw speed is the only thing you are optimising, Strong wins.

Can I use Strong for nutrition?

No. Strong is training only, so you would pair it with a food app. Ultra+ has the nutrition journal, barcode scanning and macros in the same subscription.

Ultra+ shows your previous set and your best set on every set, and tracks your food in the same app, so the two halves of gaining muscle sit in one place.
