Ultra+ vs RP Hypertrophy App: Price and Method

RP Hypertrophy is the Renaissance Periodization method as software, with mesocycles that adjust from your pump and soreness feedback. It costs $34.99 a month. Ultra+ is a quarter of that yearly, tracks food as well as training, and gives you a coach to ask instead of a fixed system.

One runs a system, the other runs your log

RP Hypertrophy is opinionated on purpose. You build a mesocycle in the Meso Builder, or pick one of 100 plus templates, and each week the app sets your targets from the feedback you give after each session: how much pump you got, how sore you were, how hard the workload felt. That feedback loop is the product, and it is a well-tested one. If you have read RP's material and want to run their method faithfully, nothing else here does it as well.

Ultra+ does not have a method. It has your history. Every set shows your previous set and your all-time best set, the session summary shows the volume change against the last run of that workout, and Blaze reads all of it before it answers a question or proposes a change. Where RP tells you what next week looks like, Ultra+ shows you what last week was and lets you ask what to do about it.

Which is better depends on whether you want a system or a record. A lifter who wants to be told exactly what to do, by a named methodology, should look hard at RP. A lifter who already has a plan and wants their numbers and their food in one place should not pay RP prices for it.

The price gap is the largest on this site

RP Hypertrophy is $34.99 a month or $299.99 a year, which works out at $24.99 a month on the yearly plan. There is no free trial; RP offers a 30-day money-back guarantee instead. Ultra+ is $12.99 a month or $74.99 a year after a 7-day trial, so the yearly plan is about a quarter of RP's.

That gap buys RP's programming logic and 250 plus technique videos, and it buys them from a company whose coaches wrote the textbook a lot of this training is based on. Whether that is worth $225 a year more than Ultra+ is a real question and the answer is not automatically no. It is a coaching price for a coaching product.

What each one leaves out

RP's product page does not list a rest timer, a plate calculator, 1RM tracking or data export, so we do not claim them either way. Nutrition is a separate RP product with its own price. And the app is locked to the RP method: it is the wrong tool for a 5/3/1 cycle or a powerlifting block, and it does not pretend otherwise.

Ultra+ has no web app, no Apple Watch app, no export, no free tier and around 500 exercises against RP's 250 plus technique videos. It also does not have a mesocycle engine. What it has instead is the food log, the barcode scanner, the previous and best set on screen, and something you can ask a question.

Which one to pick

RP Hypertrophy app icon

Pick RP Hypertrophy if

You want to run RP mesocycles exactly as RP prescribes them. You value auto-regulation from pump and soreness feedback over a coach you can talk to. You want a browser version. The price is not the deciding factor for you.

Ultra+ app icon

Pick Ultra+ if

You want training and nutrition in one subscription for a quarter of the price. You want to run whatever program you like rather than one method. You want your best set on the screen and a coach that has read your log. A 7-day trial matters more to you than a refund window.

The apps in detail

Ultra+ app icon

Ultra+

Our app

Hypertrophy and strength tracker for iOS and Android with Blaze, an AI coach that reads your log.

No free tier · $12.99/mo · $74.99/yr

Ultra+ is a training and nutrition app for people who lift to get bigger and stronger. It runs on iOS and Android, and it does not have a web app or a watch app. You log sets the normal way: pick the exercise, enter weight and reps, mark the set done, and a rest timer starts. What makes it different is what sits next to the input. Every set shows what you did last time for that exercise and your all-time best set, so the number to beat is on the screen instead of in your memory.

Where it is strong

  • Previous set and all-time best set shown on every set
  • Blaze reads your workouts, nutrition and bodyweight before answering, and changes the plan only when you ask
  • Nutrition journal with barcode scan and macros in the same app
  • Volume change after each session and a weekly card built from what you actually did
  • A finished first week already in the app from the quiz

Where it falls short

  • No web app
  • No Apple Watch app
  • No program marketplace or library of named programs
  • Newer app with a smaller exercise catalog (around 500) than JEFIT's 1,400 plus
  • No plate calculator and no data export
  • No free tier: a 7-day trial, then paid

Best for: Lifters who have trained for a while, want the number to beat on every set, and want a coach that reads their training and their food before it answers.

RP Hypertrophy

Renaissance Periodization's mesocycle app: templates and auto-regulation from your pump and soreness feedback.

No free tier · $34.99/mo · $299.99/yr

RP Hypertrophy is the Renaissance Periodization method as software. You build a mesocycle in the Meso Builder, choosing the muscles to prioritise and the days you train, or pick one of the 100 plus templates. Each week the app sets your targets and then adjusts them from the feedback you give after each session: pump, soreness and how the workload felt. It has 250 plus technique videos. It runs on iOS, on Android through Google Play, and in a browser.

Where it is strong

  • Progression logic by Renaissance Periodization: next week's targets come from your pump, soreness and performance feedback
  • 100 plus templates with body-part specialization
  • 250 plus technique videos
  • Runs in a browser as well as on iOS and Android

Where it falls short

  • By far the most expensive app here: $34.99 a month or $299.99 a year
  • No free trial, a 30-day refund window instead
  • Rest timer, plate calculator and export are not listed on the product page
  • Locked to the RP method; the wrong tool for 5/3/1 or a powerlifting block

Best for: Lifters who want to run RP-style mesocycles exactly as RP's coaches prescribe them and will pay for it.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the RP Hypertrophy app so expensive?

It is priced as coaching rather than as software. You are paying for Renaissance Periodization's programming logic and their coaches' templates, at $34.99 a month or $299.99 a year on their own product page.

Does RP Hypertrophy have a free trial?

No. RP offers a 30-day money-back guarantee instead of a trial, so you pay first and claim a refund if it is not for you.

Can I run an RP-style mesocycle in Ultra+?

You can build and run the sessions, and Blaze can help you plan a block when you ask. What Ultra+ does not have is RP's auto-regulation engine that sets next week's targets from your soreness and pump ratings.

Does either app track calories?

Ultra+ does, with food search, barcode scanning and macros included in the $12.99 a month or $74.99 a year price. RP sells nutrition as a separate product with a separate subscription.

Which has more exercises?

RP lists 250 plus technique videos rather than an exercise count. Ultra+ has around 500 exercises with start and end position photos. Neither is the biggest library here; JEFIT is, at 1,400 plus.

If you want the training and the food in one app, with your best set on every set, Ultra+ does that for a quarter of RP's yearly price.
